The Dangers of High Chlorine Levels

Swimming pools could be cesspools of disease, insect eggs, fungal growth, and bodily fluids were it not for cleaning methods like the use of chlorine. Though chlorine prevents contamination of pools, it may not actually be the safest method for keeping your pool clean. Ironically, this chemical meant to make pools safe for use can actually be a danger to you and your family if you are exposed to it on a regular basis. We would like to share the following facts about high chlorine dangers with you:

  • Chlorine is a natural element, but it is also a natural poison, like arsenic. After all, not everything natural is good for us.
  • Chlorine in pools is usually diluted to be strong enough to kill microbes but not strong enough to kill humans. Still, though, swimming in chlorine is basically swimming in poison.
  • Research by Marywood University has determined that long-term exposure to chlorinated pool water can lead to asthma, even in young swimmers. It can also lead to skin and eye irritation, as well as the erosion of tooth enamel.
  • Accidentally drinking pool water can make you feel sick for a reason; your body is telling you that you are consuming poison. While a few gulps is not enough to kill anyone, it was discovered that the long-term consumption of chlorine in drinking water led to elderly people developing dementia. This discovery was behind movements to de-chlorinate public drinking water.

Fortunately, these facts do not mean that you have to stay out of the pool for good. There are alternatives for keeping pools disinfected, such as silver-copper ion generators. Pools can also be filled with saltwater, which is naturally clean and is actually good for your skin!
